Quality over quantity. Some post just so they can have pretty little houses next to their name; however, they probably have not done any deals...maybe 1 if they’re lucky. The same goes with some of the articles that are posted. Someone will write a paragraph about what PITI is just to get some points. Another person may ask a 1000 questions, just to gain knowledge and never do a deal, but does that constitute them as an All Star Investor? I think sometimes it looks misleading and a new person may hang on to the words of what some say just because they think that person is a seasoned investor just because they have a “TCI Branded Title.” What happens 2 years from now when everyone’s title reads All Star Investor? Does it make a difference?

The flip side is also true. Just because a new person comes to the site does not automatically make them new to investing...This new person may have done many deals and may be a seasoned investor, but people pre-judge them just because of their “TCI Branded Title.” I personally think the point system sucks and adds a lot of fluff to the threads sometime.

But we have been trained since birth to always strive to be on top and be number 1. Some people need their egos stroked, so if TCI brings joy to their life...Joel, know you are touching people around the world and bringing a sense of importance to their life by calling them a(n) “__________ Investor.”.......regardless if they really invest.

I have been thinking of getting rid of it for a while now just because some people are confusing the ranking with our subscription services.

I think we might keep the houses, but just do away with the title.

I agree that the rankings are misleading.

What about an area where members can vote to rank each other - kinda like on "that auction site" where after the auction/transaction is completed, the parties involved are asked to rank the other side of the deal. Future potential buyers/sellers can check out a person's reputation prior to interaction.
Or members can rank themselves to begin with, and then reputation 'points' can be added to ranking to alter it. Or 2 rankings, 1 that the member assigns themself and another of the reputation points. Of course, there would have to be some kind of checks/balances for people who are just messing with other people. Hmmm

What I would like to see is a poster being able to have their own avatar rather than having to pick one out of a rather mundane selection. I mean enough of these smiley faces.

The titles newbie, scuby do or whatever can go as far as I am concerned everyone who spends time on this board knows who is knowledable about investing by the way they post.

The ranking system can go all it breeds is someone trying to move up from newbie to whatever, some of the posts are one sentence posts like " Yes, I think that is a good idea." or some such nonsense just to move up in the rankings.

No more houses I want the Taj Mahal for my house instead of those funny looking apartment buildings on mine.

Now I do like the Palm Tree and hope it stays. Every year that someone attends the annual TCI convention then they would get the number of times they attended shown on the face of the palm leaves.

Is it misleading? maybe. Does it need to be deleted? I dont think so. The whole idea is to create excitement and participation which is the grownd floor to success. Maybe you can leave the rankings as they are but switch up how you go about giving them. Instead of rankings being soley based on the number of postings, you can leave the number of posts, but base it on a "rank this reply" or a "rank this topic" tab. This way all the double and tripple posters who hit the sumit button 2 or 3 times just for rank will quit doing that. then we will be able to see who is really offering good sound advice and quality questions.

Am I the only one that finds this ranking thing childish? Is it that serious? Is that what gets people to post? To participate? Are we taking it back to pre-school. Here jimmy, you get a gold star today for asking a good question? Oh, Bobby, you gave a great answer so you get 2 gold stars.

I don't know about you but the content, the information is what I am after. If someone posts a good question or comment, great, I'm excited, I learned something new. Am I excited I get a gold? who cares...what I want is gold stars in my bank account.

And come to think of it, E-Bay only ranks people to give other buyers a good idea of the kind of person they are buying from. If that person is a slime ball, it will reflect in their rating. If they are a good seller/buyer, that too will reflect in their ratings. The ratings, not rankings, serves a purpose, it gives you insight as to what kind of person you are dealing with. We are sharing information of this site, good and bad. If it's good, people will recognize it. If it sucks, oh you know somebody will be quick to call it out. I personally think this ranking thing takes away from the content because people chime in with a, "Yeah, I like that too" because they want to move up in rankings. And really pay attention....you will see new people posting a comment and then type in, "By the way, I am not a newbie" They almost feel insulted by their "TCI Branded Title" and little dorky star. They feel they have to emphasis the fact that they are not new to investing as if it wouldn’t show in their posts. You may not see it on the surface, but it gets to people subconsciously...

I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong, but what do I know. I’m just glad, JohnLocke, rajwarrior, DaveT, Lufos, ShortSalePro, and the bunch of other informed and happy to share their wisdom and information investors don’t post to move up in the ranks. (Don’t take it personal if I didn’t type your name, you know if you provide useful and helpful information.)

The ranking of experience is based on how many posts people make on TCI.

This never mattered to me before.

But now I notice that rookies are asking questions and are being given some poor advice (in my opinion) by people who have posted a bunch of times. The rank they are given might say "Senior Investor" even though the poster has never bought a house.

It doesnt affect me, but I am concerned about other people who may be influenced by bad advice because they believe they are being advised by an experienced investor.

Just let everyone pick their own ranking.

Most will be honest. and that is safer than being ranked based on your time at TCI website!

i don't care for the rankings as they stand. I do like John Locke's idea of uploading our own avatars (smilies are EVIL!!!) though. I would rather see a "member since" next to my name, rather than a title that's based on posts i've made.
