Federal housing grants are available for individuals, businesses and nonprofit organizations. Get the proper information by contacting the Department of Housing and Urban development (HUD).

1. Visit the HUD Web site at www.hud.gov.

2. Click on "business" in the left-hand column, then go to "funding" at the top of the list.

3. Click on "HUD Programs," then go to "Single Family Housing Program" for information on

mortgage insurance, property improvement insurance and other programs.

4. Select on "Multifamily Housing" for information on Section 8, supportive housing for the elderly and disabled, drug elimination grants, safe neighborhood grants and other programs.

5. Look under "Healthcare Facilities" for information on mortgage insurance for hospitals, group practices and nursing homes.

6. Click on "Office of Public and Indian Housing" for information on subsidies for development/redevelopment, HOPE programs, Section 8, block grants and other programs for Native American communities.

7. See "Office of Community Planning and development" for information on block grants, economic development funds, YouthBuild, HOME, HOPE, SHOP, Habitat for Humanity, emergency shelter grants, HOPWA and other programs.

8. Look under "Community Outreach Partnerships Centers Program" for university and college grants to set up Community Outreach programs.

9. See the "Office of Lead Hazard Control" for information on the Lead-Based Abatement Program.

You can also call one of HUD's toll-free numbers by looking "HUD" up in the federal government listings of the phone book.

Consider subscribing to Family Services Report at www.cdpublications/funding.com if you need ongoing information on federal grants.

For tenant assistance programs, call your local housing authority by looking up "Housing Authority" under your city (or sometimes county) government listings in the phone book.

Look to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) for a broad view of all federally sponsored grants. Contact HUD for more information
